Στη συνέχεια θα ακολουθήσουν μουσικοχορευτικά δρώμενα με τη συμμετοχή των Ubuntu Drum and Dance και The Syrian and Greek Youth Forum, και ένα ανοιχτό δείπνο (community dinner) με γεύσεις από τη Συρία, το Αφγανιστάν και τη Νότια Αφρική.

ATHENS, MY NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD

#CuringtheLimbo together with synAthina and the City of Athens, are inviting you to a special celebration in the heart of the city.

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the pilot integration program Curing the Limbo and synAthina of the City of Athens, invite you to a special celebration at the Trigono (Commercial Triangle in the City Centre) at the junction of Aiolou and Chrysospiliotissis on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 19:00.

For the first part of the celebrations, we will present an open-air exhibition “Athens, my new neighborhood” aiming to introduce the participants of Curing the Limbo also refugees in the city with a recognized status, through their stories and images. Those personal narratives were the outcome of a series of research methodology and focus groups interviews, organized by the synAthina team in order to explore further their everyday experiences and customs of refugees in the city. All images of the exhibition are the product of a series of photography workshops organized in May in Athens, by the “I LUV Athens project”, Urban Layers and the audiovisual classes of Curing the Limbo curated and delivered by the University of Athens.

The exhibition will follow various dance and music performances by
Ubuntu Drum and Dance Theatre and The Syrian & Greek Youth Forum / SGYF and a community dinner where everyone is welcomed to join us, celebrating the flavors of Syria, Afghanistan, and South Africa.

The event is aiming to present good practices across the civil society, to connect refugees and active citizens in neighborhoods across Athens and to create new collaborative actions opportunities for the long-term benefit of the city itself.

This European funded pilot program Curing the Limbo, aims to create a dynamic and innovative model of social integration where refugees become active members of the city, attend greek, english, creative and technology courses, access affordable housing and participate in customised employment training opportunities. Those steps, encourage refugees to become a vital part of the city, to connect with their fellow active citizens, to participate in activities across neighbourhoods of Athens. Together, refugees and the city itself become active, work together and happily co-exist.

Curing the Limbo
is a program aiming to implement a dynamic and innovative model for integration that allows refugees to become socially active. This can be achieved through attending courses in Greek, English, Creative Expression and ICT, gaining access to affordable housing, and receiving professional counseling services tailored to their needs. Refugees are thus integrated in the life of the city, by interacting with active citizen groups and participating in public events held in the neighbourhoods of Athens. In coming together, the refugees and the city exit their “limbo” state, boosting activity, cooperation, and co-existence.

Curing the Limbo is a European pilot program of the
city of Athens implemented with the strategic partnership of the University of Athens, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA). This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) initiative.
