Youth Play Competition and Festival by the Children's Rights Network

Acting for children’s rights!

The rights of the child become a theatrical play

The Network for Children’s Rights is organizing a nationwide playwriting competition for middle and high school students, with the aim of informing teenagers about their rights, through encouraging their creativity and artistic expression! The program is implemented with a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Writing and performing arts become the vehicle for teens to discover their rights! Through this competition, we aim to inform the children themselves, but also the general public on the issue of children’s rights, as defined and protected in the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which has been a law of the Greek state since 1992 (N .2101/1992).

The aim is to inspire children by the Convention and specifically by the ever-present right enshrined in Article 2, which concerns the prohibition of any kind of discrimination (race, gender, religion, etc.) against children. In particular, teenagers will be able to participate in the competition by submitting an original one-act play that they will write, in order to express their own perspective on the issue of discrimination against children!

The selection of the projects in the 1st evaluation stage will be made by a special Committee, which we have the pleasure of consisting of: Alexandros Varthiσ, Evi Gerokosta, Georgina Kakoudaki, Theoni Koufonikolakou and Stella Serefoglou!

From all entries, the Committee will select ten projects (March 2023), five from each entry category, one for middle school students and one for high school students. These works will be presented in the form of a theatrical analogy by the Higher School of Dramatic Art New Hellenic Theater and will be videotaped, with the aim of being posted on the YouTube channel of the Network (May 2023). There, they will remain open to public voting (June 2023), in order to finalize two projects, one from each category. The creators of the ten works will receive commemorative gifts and the first in each category will be awarded with corresponding prizes.

Finally, in collaboration with the New Greek Theatre, the two distinguished works will be presented to the public in the form of a performance at a Festival organized by the Network in October 2023!

Thus, the winners will have the opportunity to see their writing come to life and be presented in front of an audience!

Entries can be individual or group (up to 5 people). The texts should be written in the Greek language and sent to the e-mail address [email protected]. Entries will be accepted from the day the competition starts, Monday 3 October 2022 until its end, Tuesday 31 January 2023 in the manner set out in the terms of the competition.

We are waiting for your entries!
