The “Multaka Athens” project for the promotion of intercultural dialogue has been launched

The “Multaka Athens” project aiming at strengthening and empowering intercultural dialogue has been launched and invites residents and visitors of the city to participate in tours, implemented by refugees and migrants, as well as Greeks with migrant or refugee background, in museums and archaeological sites of Athens.

Melina Daskalaki, Special Advisor to the Mayor of Athens for Migrants and Refugees and President of the Reception and Solidarity Center (K.Y.A.D.A.), is enjoying a tour at the Epigraphic Museum  provided by an ‘intercultural guide”.

“Multaka” means meeting point in Arabic. Just as its name suggests, the project, implemented by the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency S.A. (ADDMA) and designed by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the City of Athens, familiarizes migrants and refugees with the history and culture of Greece.

At the same time, the ‘intercultural guides’ themselves share aspects of their own culture and experience giving a trigger for the identification of common references and values as well for the development of an intercultural exchange. As part of the project, the ‘intercultural guides’ have received relevant training by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Tours are provided in Greek, English, French, Arabic and Farsi at the following sites: (a) Museum of Modern Greek Culture, (b) Epigraphic Museum, (c) Ancient Agora and (d) Keramikos. Up to today, tours have taken place at the Epigraphic Museum and the Museum of Modern Greek Culture, specifically at the permanent exhibition “People and Tools. Aspects of work in pre-industrial society” and in the area of the Bath House of the Winds. Similar projects are implemented in various European cities, the first being Berlin, where Multaka started in 2015 and is still ongoing.
