The Municipality of Athens was the first local government body to realize the need for an organized refugee management plan. Since March 2016, through the Development and Tourism Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens, it has been active for the above groups in the form of rental housing.
In the spring of 2017, the Housing Program for Asylum Seekers of EATA, was part of ESTIA (“Emergency Support for Integration and Housing”) implemented by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with funding from the European Union or the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) and covered about 1,700 beneficiaries, who were housed in 280 rented apartments.
In the following years, EATA continued to provide housing to asylum seekers while at the same time accompanying services were expanded and the provision of psychosocial support was further developed.
From September 2017, when the official relocation program is completed, until 2020, the Project, under the auspices of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, increased the number of hosting sites, reorganized internally, implemented new procedures and developed a centralized, secure service structure, the “SocioHub”. In 2020 the Program had 320 apartments and 1820 accommodation places, while in total from its first year of operation until the end of 2020 more than 6,000 people were served.
From January 1, 2021 the management of the Program was undertaken by the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum under the title “Provision of Housing and Services for Asylum Seekers (ESTIA2021) in the Municipality of Athens” and with funding from the Public Investment Program of the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum to be funded by the budget of the European Union Asylum, Immigration and Integration Fund (AMIF) Emergency Support Facility.
