The Greek Council for Refugees was founded in 1989 and is the oldest and largest NGO in Greece, exclusively dedicated to international protection issues. Our mission is to defend the rights of people who are entitled to protection in our country, as well as their smooth integration into local society. Refugees and beneficiaries of international protection in general - especially vulnerable cases such as unaccompanied minors, victims of trafficking, sexual violence, torture, etc. - they are the served population of the GCR and receive from its specialized staff the necessary social and legal counseling and support so that they manage to lay the foundations of a new life without fear of persecution. GCR has to date supported over 151,700 asylum seekers and refugees. GCR is based in Athens, maintains offices in Thessaloniki and Lesvos and has a legal presence in Kos, in Irakleio Crete and Evros. Also, GCR staff carry out missions to camps throughout the country, with a special emphasis on the border areas.
