Global Brigades Greece
Global Brigades - The Largest Movement for Global Health and Holistic Development
Global Brigades is an international non-profit that uniquely implements a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Our vision is to empower volunteers and under-resourced communities to resolve global health and economic disparities and inspire all involved to collaboratively work towards an equal world.
Global Brigades Hellas AMKE
In 2018, Global Brigades was invited to Greece to explore the opportunity to fill a void for healthcare services in long-term accommodation centers for refugees and asylum seekers. Our team traveled to Greece, validated the need, and grew enthusiastic about the enormous potential of adapting our tenants of development work: holistic model, sustainability, empowerment of community members, and increased collaboration with local government and NGOs in this unique setting.
In 2019, we established the Greek NGO Global Brigades Greece and ran our pilot programs in Ritsona and Malakasa long-term accommodation centers. We started with medical brigades in partnership with the Ministry of Health (EODY), the International Organization for Migration, and other actors in the field. Teams of volunteer students (brigades) worked alongside healthcare professionals licensed to practice medicine in Greece (paediatricians, dentists, ophthalmologists) and other professionals (administrators, psychologists, coordinators) to provide free primary health care services to the residents of the two centers.
Global Brigades Athens Clinic
In 2020, our operations were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the preventive measures in force but Global Brigades has a new and ambitious plan for 2021: the establishment of a polyclinic at the center of Athens (55-59 Deligiorgi street, Metaxourgio square). From March 2021, our team will provide free primary healthcare services to vulnerable populations. We will begin with doctors specializing in pediatrics and general medicine while additional specialties will be added in the near future.
In the setting of our day clinic, our aim is to make patients feel valued and respected as a whole person whose need for quality healthcare will be fulfilled, along with sensitivity to gender, ethnicity, and cultural beliefs. In addition, along with the provision of primary healthcare, we will provide training around basic aspects of health care services and prevention, like the necessity of monitoring for chronic diseases, immunization and breastfeeding, maternal and newborn health, aspects of puberty, etc. Finally, we will serve as coordinators, arranging referrals to specialists based on the underlying conditions of our patients.
